NJCU Women's Basketball Defeats Division II Bridgeport 69-66

Against Bridgeport, NJCU won 69-66 on the strength of 30 points from Damaris Rodriguez and a 17-5 run in the final quarter.

The New Jersey City University women's basketball team defeated Division II opponent the University of Bridgeport, 69-66, on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3. The Gothic Knights were led by senior guard Damaris Rodriguez, who had a game-high 30 points. NJCU has won three straight, and five of its last six games.

The Purple Knights jumped out to an early lead, but NJCU used a big second quarter to turn the tide of the game. The Gothic Knights outscored Bridgeport 24-11 in the quarter to take a six-point lead at halftime.

Bridgeport regained the momentum in the third quarter and took an eight-point lead with just 2:24 to go in the period. However, NJCU went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter and trail by just one point heading into the fourth quarter.

The Purple Knights went back up by seven to start the fourth quarter, but NJCU answered with a 17-5 run to take a five-point lead. Bridgeport cut it back to a one-point game with less than a minute to go, but Rodriguez hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to go to ice the game for NJCU.
